Steve's stuffJune 02 Ultra Mobilityso finally my Samsung Q1 UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) arrived today, and well it was kind of a surprise... a good and bad kind of one. My first reaction after taking the device out of the box was that it was way bigger than I thought and this was a little bit of a disappointment, don't get me wrong it's still not big if you look at your keyboard in front of you its no longer than between the tab key and the p key and its about 6 rows of keys wide (sorry I could get the physical dimensions but honestly they mean nothing until you hold the device). I fired up the OS and any worries about this device just disappeared, the screen resolution is fantastic, the control of this PC is totally intuitive and using it just started to make me smile. The new Dial Keys is a really clever data entry system, although it does feel a little sc-fi walking around with this whilst your typing (which I think I'm renaming thumbing). So far it's coping with everything I've asked it to run, my current set up is Office 12 Beta2, VSTS, WMP 11, Windows Live Messenger, Skype (the array mics work a treat), AutoRoute 2006 paired with a GPS receiver, I've also paired a bluetooth keyboard for large document editing sessions. In a couple of weeks I will load Vista Beta 2 on to it just to see what happens. I'm off to Tech Ed in just over a week’s time so I'm going to try and live with just this device (ok I got a couple of Smartphone’s as backup (SP5, Universal and Wizard) but it will be really nice to travel without lugging an 8lb laptop I will post more UMPC adventures as they happen May 26 Here we go againSo will I be any more successful this time with blogging now that I can blog from word…. Time will tell….. until then this feature totally rocks!! January 04 Talking about Jack Greenfield's Blog |
